I had never expected such an answer from my son.
I was 28 at the time and my son had just been admitted into Madison Lakes Elementary, and was sitting on a park bench with me, telling me all about his friends there, all of the teachers... He was extremely excited, I could tell. Looking up into the cloudy blue sky while I listened to him ramble, I was having a hard time thinking of questions to ask him about his new school. Probably because he was answering every singl e one of them before I even asked them.
Being in America, there were people of many different races and nationalities that lived here, so I decided to ask him about those people there. He loved geography, and if he saw someone who had a different accent or anything of that matter, he would ask them where they were from. It was embarrassing for me , I thought he was being rude and didn't realize it. But the people would always smile and tell him where, whether it be the UK, China, you name it. Afterwards, he would get into his seat in my car and demand that I take him to the library so that he could learn about those places. I would always help, giving him every bit of knowledge he longed for. He would even tell me fun facts, things that I had no clue about. He was familiar with the word‘foreigner’, even though he had no idea what it meant. I sighed and spoke.
“So, David, are there any foreigners at your school?” He looked at me with the biggest smile I had ever seen, swinging his legs back on forth on the bench.
“No, Daddy. Just kids.”
24. What can we learn from the second paragraph?

   B. He wanted to make friends with them.
   C. He was interested in their places.
   D. He didn’t realize it was rude.
26. What does the underlined word mean?

   A. There were no foreign kids in his school.
   B. He was lying to his father.
   C. He was too careless to notice.
D. He didn’t know what foreigners really mean.

C
There’s a group of scientists who want you to forget the big clumsy robots in the science fiction movies of old. Instead, say hello to the updated model: a robot designed to help people who need help the most. In a lab deep in the Silicon Valley, robots are being programmed to do household chores like folding laundry, sorting socks and acting a little more human.
“I think robotic technology is awesome!” exclaimed Leila Takayama, who works at Willow Garage, a company that designs and tests personal robots, making them less intimidating.
They’re also making them more practical, but it’s not housework that’s placing these robots on the cutting edge. It’s what they’ve done for people like Henry Evans, who at the age of 40 suffered a severe stroke. It left him a quadriplegic(四肢瘫痪的), able to understand, unable to speak.
“I didn’t know what was going to happen. He was literally trapped in his body,” said Henry’s wife, Jane Evans.
Evans recently became one of the first to test a personal robot, named “Jake”, donated by Willow Garage to a team of scientists at Georgia Tech.
With eye movements and his limited use of one finger, Henry Evans can now program the robot to help him shave, help him scratch, and to get a towel. It takes a lot of work, and time for Henry’s clumsy, 400-pound machine.
Charlie Kemp of Georgia Tech says there are important reasons why a robot is preferable to some disabled people than hiring a helper.
“It’s the difference between asking someone to do it for you, versus doing it for yourself. People really want to do things for themselves. They want that independence,” Kemp said.
For Henry, doing anything independently was once unthinkable.
“When you see the sense of satisfaction in his face, I mean, there’s no words to describe it. It’s amazing,” Jane Evans said. “I love the robot! The robot has helped change my husband into this person that I never dreamed possible.”
It’s a technology opening up a world of endless possibilities.
28. Why is the new robot Jake advanced?
A. It is more practical and smart.
B. It can do any housework.
C. It can take the place of human helpers.
D. It helps quadriplegic people be independent.
29. Why do some disabled people prefer a robot to hiring a helper?
A. It will do anything as is told to.
B. It gives a sense of independence.
C. It is easy to be programmed.
D. It is a cheap hi-tech product.
30. What difference does the robot make to Henry?
A. He can do everything independently.
B. He has been changed into another person.
C. He can manage some housework by himself.
D. He can express his emotion through his face.
31. What does Jane think of the robot?
   A. Satisfying.                     B. Needs to be improved.
   C. The most advanced.              D. Lovely.

D
Scientists are developing a medical device that could tell them more about the human body, and help them develop more-effective treatments for cancer, heart disease and brain disorders.
It would be the world's first full-body PET scanner(正子断层摄影扫描器). PET scanners create 3-D images of what is happening in the body.
Researchers are calling the large scanner Explorer. It will give medical workers images of what is happening in the entire human body that have never been seen before. PET s canners now give doctors images of only parts of the body.
Ramsey Badawi, a radiological professor at UC Davis, says the scanner will give researchers new information about how human organs work together.
“We’re a system of organs and all the organs interact with each other. PET scans show doctors how organs and tissues are working on a molecular level. These images help doctors identify and follow diseases. The new scanner will help them do that even better.”
Simon Cherry, a biomedical professor at UC Davis, says the PET scans can show the progress of both disease and medical treatments.
“With PET scans, we’re actually able to see something about what the cells in the body are doing -- how actively they’re metabolizing(新陈代谢), for example, or how quickly they’re dividing. Take a cancer example. It could be tremendously powerful to see, when you give a drug, whether it shuts down the metabolism of the tumor.”
PET scans use a radioactive substance to find tumors. Professor Cherry says the Explorer uses a much lower amount of radiation than current PET tests, and creates images more quickly.
A complete view could help researchers develop new medicines that target diseases and parts of the body. It could help doctors reduce harmful side effects by following the movement of medicines through the body.
The researchers hope to test the Explorer with humans in three years.
32. How will Explore be different from present PET scanners?
A. It will create images of what’s happening in the body.
B. It will show organs and tissues on a molecular level.
C. It will give full images of the whole body.
D. It will show what cells are doing in t he body.
33. What will patients benefit from Explorer?
A. They will be exposed to less radiation.
B. They will not suffer side effects of drugs.
C. They will be cured of cancer easily.
D. They will be examined more carefully.
34. How will Explorer help doctors?
A. Develop new medicines targeting diseases.
B. Get rid of side effects of medicines.
C. Stop the metabolizing of cells in the body.
D. Better identify and follow diseases.
35. What could be the best title for the passage?
A. New ways to treat diseases with the help of PET scanners.
B. A new PET to show human body as never seen before.
C. The application of PET scanners in treating diseases.
D. The progress in medical equipment and medicine.
