Part A Reading aloud

It goes without saying that technology plays a pivotal role in our lives. It’s more than likely that you’ll find it hard to imagine life without a mobile phone or access to the Internet. We already live in a world where it’s possible to create 3D objects with a printer. Self-drive cars and artificial intelligence are a reality and experts promise the imminent arrival of the Internet of Things that will control our homes and lives. But hand in hand with this increasing reliance on technology, there is a corresponding risk that we will find ourselves completely unable to function as a society without it.

M: Hey, Mary! I haven’t seen you in the Reading Club for a while. Where have you been?

W: I went on vacation with my family.

M: Oh, I see. Where did you go?

W: We went to Western Australia. We stayed there for two weeks and visited several natural wonders.

M: It sounds lovely. Which one impressed you most?

W: I’d like to pick Lake Hillier, a famous pink lake in Australia.

M: Pink lake? You mean the color of the lake is pink?

W: Yes, exactly.

三问:

Why does the lake look pink?

Why is the lake pink?

The exact reason is still unknown. Scientific debates over the courses of its color have been on for years. But it’s probably the micro-organisms living there that make the lake pink. Research on the pink lake is still very active. I happened to meet a researcher at the airport. When I knew he was going to the pink lake, I thought him very lucky.

Why did you think he was very lucky?

What was the reason that you thought him very lucky?

Why did you think he was very fortunate?

Because he could get on the island where the lake is. Nowadays, human activities are limited on the island to preserve the environment. The permit to get onto the island is not given to tourists, but to scientific researchers only. Tourists are advised to view this lake from the sky by flight. Actually, I think it’s the best way to see the bright pink. It’s really beautiful. I plan to see another pink lake next year.

How many pink lakes are there in Australia?

Can you tell me how many pink lakes there are in Australia?

Could you tell me how many pink lakes there are in Australia?

I’m not sure. I know there’s one more in Western Australia and a fall in South Australia. Other countries also have pink lakes, such as France, Russia, and the United States. My friend visited the other pink lake in Western Australia two years ago. She even swam in it. What a wonderful experience!

Surprises for Everyone

Tom’s grandma moved to a new house. Tom wanted to buy her a special gift. One afternoon, when grandma was away with her neighbor Mary, Tom went to the flower market and bought some lovely pot plants. Then he drove to his grandma’s house and moved the plants into the front garden. It was hard work, and it took him three hours. When it was done, the garden looked wonderful. Tom went back home with joy. The next morning, Tom called his grandma and asked whether she had found anything special in her garden. Grandma said she didn’t find anything different. Tom felt puzzled. He immediately went to grandma’s house. To his surprise, the plants were gone. Someone must have stolen them. Just then, grandma’s neighbor Mary came to tell them happily that someone had given her some beautiful pot plants. “Oh, no!” Tom cried. He realized he had made a mistake. Grandma’s house was just beside Mary’s. The houses there were all new and looked the same. He had mixed them up. Tom said it was a sweet mistake and Mary could keep the plants. Later, Tom bought some plants for his grandma. And this time, he put them in the right place.
