One Possible Version Dear Sir/Madam, I
am Li Hua, a Senior 3 student in Hongxing Middle School. Learning that
you are recruiting volunteers for the coming 18th World Middle School
Games in Jinjiang, Fujian, in 2020, I am writing to apply for this
position. As
a super fan of sports, I am eager to expose myself in various
sports-related activities. World Middle School Games is such a golden
opportunity to meet the outstanding teenagers worldwide that I really
don’t want to miss it. In addition, the voluntary service will offer a
precious chance to contribute to our society, which appeals to me very
much. I
believe I am a qualified candidate. A good command of English ensures
that I can communicate with the foreign athletes effectively. Moreover,
with my love and knowledge for sports as well as Chinese history and
culture, I can fulfill my role not only as a successful coordinator but
also a cultural ambassador to spread the splendid Chinese culture. I am longing to join you and I would be grateful if you could offer me the opportunity. Thank you for your consideration. Yours, Li Hua
One possible version: Dear Jim, I
am glad to know that you have joined your school’s calligraphy club.
The calligraphy piece I sent to you was written by myself. I really hope
you will like it. The
Chinese characters on the piece are “天道酬勤” (Tian Dao Chou Qin), meaning
“Hard work pays off.” It is a well-known Chinese idiom, widely adopted
as a motto by Chinese people. There is a similar calligraphy piece
hanging in the study at my home, which was written by my grandfather. He
gave it to me when I started to learn calligraphy at age six in hopes
that I would practise it often and learn it well. You see now my efforts
have paid off. I hope it can serve as an encouragement to you at all
times. I wrote this piece in the calligraphic style of my favorite
calligrapher, Yan Zhenqing, a renowned master of the Tang Dynasty. His
style is Kaishu, a standard script, suitable for beginners. I guess
maybe it is the style that you are practising. I
know it is not easy to learn Chinese calligraphy. If you have any
problems during your study, I would be happy to help you. I sincerely
hope you enjoy learning Chinese calligraphy! Yours, Li Hua
Dear Jim, Nice
to hear from you! In your letter, you asked me about my life. As the
College Entrance Examination is drawing near, I’m trying my best to
prepare for it. Exercises and exams have taken up most of my time. I’ve
never been busier and can only find time to listen to music on the way
home. As
you can tell, the process is tough and I’m tired, but along the way, I
have managed to do what I thought impossible. Although there is still a
lot for me to improve on, I do have confidence in myself. I
hope with so much effort, I will get admitted to my dream university.
I’m also expecting the coming summer holiday, for I will surely have
plenty of time to enjoy myself! What’s your plan after high school? Hope to hear from you soon. Yours, Li Hua
Dear Peter, It has been so long since last time we talked with each other. How is everything going? As
you know, Mother’s Day is drawing near and I am planning to give my mom
a big surprise on that day. I bought a cook book last week so that I
can learn how to cook the dishes my mom loves. I have been working on it
for a couple of days and I hope when the day comes, I am well prepared! I
am very nervous because this will be the first time I cook for my mom.
What do you think of the plan and what surprise are you going to present
to your mom? Write to me soon! I am looking forward to your reply. Yours, Li Hua
Dear Jim, I’m writing to invite you to attend the Chinese Folk Music Festival in our community next weekend. At
the festival, there will be various performances, such as the
performances of folk musical instruments, folk songs, folk operas, folk
dances and so on. Besides, several lectures will be given by
professional artists and teachers on different aspects of Chinese folk
music. Since you have always been interested in Chinese folk music, I
think this is a great chance for you to be exposed to the rich music
atmosphere. So what do you think of the Music Festival? If you’d like to come, feel free to contact me. Yours,
Dear Jim, I’m
writing to tell you that an exhibition about our school’s history will
take place at our school, and I am wondering if you can come and visit
it. The
exhibition, which will be held on the fourth floor in the main teaching
building on May 8th, will cover many aspects of our school, including
the big events that have happened in the school’s history, the various
awards we have received during these years, and even the great
accomplishments of some of our excellent graduates. The exhibition
definitely reflects the development and the achievements of our school,
and I believe that after your visit, it will hold a special place in
your heart. If you are interested in attending the exhibition, please
let me know and I’ll send you more information about it. Hope to meet you then. Yours, Li Hua
