Introduction to BIFT

Beijing Institute of Fashion Technology(BIFT), founded in 1959, is the first higher education institution in China specializing in fashion. It is rooted in the rich cultural heritage and innovative vitality of the capital, Beijing. Upholding the motto "In Pursuit of Beauty to Beautify the World " the institute is guided by design studies, adhering to the educational philosophy of "integration of art and technology," and is committed to cultivating versatile art and design talents with an international perspective, social responsibility, and cutting-edge creativity.

The university offers 8 full-time undergraduate teaching schools and relies on its comprehensive academic ecosystem in fashion and design, with a leading level of professional development in China. Design studies, as a high-level discipline in Beijing, ranks highly in the Ministry of Education’s discipline evaluation and has multiple national-level first-class undergraduate programs. The institute has built a high-level training system spanning from undergraduate to doctoral degrees, providing students with a solid platform for academic development and professional innovation.

BIFT actively leverages its four major advantages—design capability, technological power, organizational strength, and communication ability—to serve the country’s major needs. It provided landscape and visual design for 9 venues in the Winter Olympics and Paralympic Games. Program Features

The Environmental Design major aims to improve the living environment, focusing on design approaches that produce functional, human-centered environments and in harmony with human physical functions. It emphasizes functionality, user experience, and material innovation, while also paying attention to the multidimensional collaboration between design, architecture, and urban sustainability. Adhering to the concept of ecological sustainability, the major uses an integrated approach to address design challenges, focusing on climate change, biodiversity, and sustainable urban-rural development. It cultivates artistic approaches and design strategies to address site-specific issues. In addition, the Environmental Design major incorporates the background of artificial intelligence, big data, and robotics manufacturing, integrating information and media technologies. It fosters innovative education and practical abilities, exploring interdisciplinary practices that combine media information and engineering.


1.Educational Objectives

The Environmental Design program is dedicated to cultivating creative design professionals capable of addressing complex environmental challenges in the contemporary era. Integrating knowledge from architecture, engineering, ecology, and sociology, the program is guided by an educational philosophy that places sustainability at its core, interdisciplinary collaboration as its primary approach, and creative design as its mode of expression.

Focusing on emerging-market cities along the Belt and Road corridor, the program engages with practical fields including urban construction, urban regeneration, urban development, and environmental quality improvement, responding to the spatial and social challenges arising from rapid urbanization. The curriculum aims to develop versatile professionals with solid disciplinary foundations who can operate across different stages of urban development. By fostering an understanding of local conditions and cultural differences, students acquire systematic design and practice capabilities oriented toward emerging markets, while developing an open and mature international perspective.

The program also emphasizes social responsibility in the face of climate change and humanistic concern for socio-spatial issues, equipping students with the ability to address design challenges associated with urban–rural environmental transformation and to propose effective solutions to complex environmental problems.


2.Core Courses

The core curriculum includes Environmental Design, Architectural Design, History of Urban Design, Urban Heritage Conservation, CAD, Urban Modeling and Physical Model Making, Urban Public Space, and Smart City Studies, providing students with a systematic foundation that integrates design methods, technical skills, and urban research.

The program places particular emphasis on urban regeneration and renewal in the context of China’s rapid urbanization. Through focused studies on community regeneration, historic district conservation, and public space improvement, students are guided to understand the complex experiences and practical approaches that have emerged from China’s urban development. Building on this foundation, the curriculum encourages students to translate local urban renewal experience into knowledge and practice with international relevance and comparative value.


3.Practical Teaching Components

Urban Community Design Practice, Ecological and Environmental Field Investigation and Practice, Vernacular Studies and Field Research, Rural Infrastructure Assessment and Evaluation, and Cultural Tourism Project Planning Practice.

This program is structured around a project-based practical teaching framework, emphasizing the close integration of coursework with real-world sites and ongoing projects. From the beginning of the program, students are immersed in a practice-oriented learning environment, in which teaching activities are directly embedded in live rural revitalization and urban regeneration projects.

The practical components focus on urban and rural community design practice, ecological and environmental field investigation, vernacular and rural studies, assessment of rural infrastructure, and planning and design practice related to cultural tourism and public space development. These components are not treated as isolated exercises, but are integrated into a coherent project workflow.

The curriculum is organized around two major studio-based projects per academic year, with each semester dedicated to one complete project. Students engage in the full process—from field research and problem identification to design development and strategic proposals—within real and complex urban–rural contexts. Practice sites are drawn from ongoing projects, including established rural revitalization initiatives and concrete urban regeneration cases such as Zhangjiawan Town in Tongzhou District, Beijing, ensuring that students gain direct experience with authentic planning and design challenges.

Through sustained engagement in real projects, practical teaching becomes a defining feature of the program, equipping students with the ability to operate effectively in emerging-market contexts and to address complex spatial, environmental, and social issues with an international perspective.

The program is supported by collaborative partnerships with leading professional institutions, ensuring a strong connection between education, research, and real-world practice. Teaching and practical components are jointly developed with institutions such as Beijing Institute of Architectural Design and Beijing Institute of Urban Planning and Design, as well as other major urban planning and research organizations in Beijing.

Through collaboration with these institutions, students gain direct exposure to ongoing urban renewal, planning, and design projects, participate in professional workflows, and engage with practitioners at the forefront of China’s urban development. This cooperative framework strengthens the program’s practice-oriented teaching model and enhances students’ ability to operate within complex institutional, technical, and social contexts, both in China and in international emerging-market settings.


4.Faculty team

The program is supported by a strong and distinguished faculty, bringing together renowned scholars from China and abroad, national-level teaching award recipients, and leading figures such as honorees of the Top Ten Outstanding Young Designers in China. The teaching team includes Fei Che, Professor and Dean of the School of Art and Design, architect, and PhD graduate of Bauhaus University Weimar; John Mandsberg, Professor at Beijing Institute of Fashion Technology, Chartered Member of the Hamburg Chamber of Architects, recipient of the First Prize of the BDA (Association of German Architects) Hamburg, educated at ETH Zurich and holder of a Master’s degree in Architecture from Technische Universität Braunschweig, formerly a designer at GMP Architects in Hamburg and Design Director of GMP International’s Berlin and Beijing offices; and Tienan Ji, Professor of architectural phenomenology, Master of Architecture from Yale University, who has previously taught at the University at Buffalo, State University of New York; Sinhgad College of Architecture in India; Tallinn University of Technology in Estonia; and the Bergen School of Architecture in Norway. In addition, the program features internationally recognized experts and scholars from countries including the United States, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Norway, fostering a diverse and global academic environment. Full English instruction is offered to provide students with a broad international perspective and rich opportunities for cross-cultural exchange.

Duration and Degree

The standard duration for the undergraduate program is 4 years, with a maximum study period of 6 years. Students who complete the required credits and meet all graduation requirements will be awarded a graduation certificate. Those who fulfill the stipulated conditions will be conferred a bachelor’s degree by the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China. The program is full-time.

Application Requirements

1. Applicants must be non-Chinese citizens holding a valid foreign passport. In principle, they should be between 18 and 24 years of age.

2. Applicants must be of good character and in good health, willing to comply with the laws and regulations of China and the university's rules, and respect Chinese customs.

3.Applicants must hold a high school diploma or an equivalent qualification.

4.English language proficiency must be at least IELTS 5.5 or equivalent. Requirements may be relaxed for exceptionally outstanding applicants.

Application Period

Applications will be accepted from the date of this announcement until June 10, 2026.

Application Procedures

2.Pay the Application Fee: 600 RMB (non-refundable). Payment must be made online.

3.Interview or Written Test (Specific arrangements will be confirmed and announced at a later date.)

Interview Procedure

After passing the preliminary review of the application materials, applicants will be notified to attend either an on-site interview or an online interview.

Admission Process

1.The deadline for submitting all application materials, photos (in JPG format), and videos via email or post is June 10, 2026 (based on the postmark date for mailed items).

2.An expert panel will review the submitted application materials.

3.The shortlist for interviews will be confirmed and announced by the university no later than June 20, 2026. Interviews will be conducted collectively by the expert panel.

4.Admission decisions will be based on a comprehensive evaluation of high school academic performance, language proficiency, and interview performance. Outstanding international students may be awarded scholarships.

Enrollment Registration

1. Original Admission Notice or copy.

2. Original application documents for verification.

3. Signed confirmation of enrollment information.

4. Photocopy of valid identification documents of their guardian in China.

5.Valid student visa/residence permit, medical insurance policy, and physical examination report.

6. Two recent passport-sized (2-inch) photos with a white background.

7. Payment receipt for the first academic year’s tuition (for non-scholarship students).

8. On-campus accommodation application: Students intending to live in university dormitories must apply by June 10, 2026. The college will arrange in the order of application based on the actual availability of vacant beds.

Fees and Scholarships

1. Tuition and Fees (RMB):

2. Accommodation Fee: 50–60 RMB per bed per day, payable in full for each semester via the university’s online payment platform.

3. Scholarships: Eligible students may apply for the Beijing Government Scholarship for International Students (Categories A, B, C, D).

4. Medical Insurance: Purchasing comprehensive medical insurance in mainland China is mandatory for all international students as per regulations. Students can pay online prior to registration or purchase on-site during enrollment. Registration will not be processed for students without valid insurance.

Accommodation

1. The university offers on-campus dormitories with double and triple rooms. Rooms are equipped with air conditioning, private bathroom/shower, basic furnishings, and kitchen facilities. Self-service laundry facilities in the dorm area are available.

2. Students opting for off-campus housing must register with the local police station within 24 hours of moving in, in accordance with Chinese regulations.

International Student Regulations

1. The management of international students follows the “Administrative Regulations on the Enrollment and Cultivation of International Students by Schools” issued by the Chinese Ministry of Education, as well as relevant BIFT policies on student status and dormitory management.

2. According to regulations of the Chinese Ministry of Education, all new students will undergo a comprehensive review within three months of enrollment. The university reserves the right to take appropriate measures, including dismissal, if a student is found unqualified.

3. New students must undergo a medical examination at the Haidian Clinic of Beijing International Travel Health care Center within one week of arrival and submit the original copy of the “Foreigner Physical Examination Record.”

4. Visa/Residence Permit Regulations:

(1) Admitted students will receive the original Admission Notice and JW202 Form by mail. They must apply for an X1 visa at the Chinese embassy/consulate in their home country and convert it into a residence permit for study purposes at the Beijing Exit-Entry Administration Bureau within 30 days of entering China.

(2) Students unable to register on time must request a leave of absence via email before the registration date. The university may reserve their admission eligibility for up to one month. Those who fail to register without valid reason or after approved leave will have their admission eligibility revoked.

(3) Applicants who already hold a valid residence permit for study in China must complete the transfer and extension procedures at the International Student Office at least one month before the permit expires.

Matters that are not covered herein shall be interpreted by the School of International Education of BIFT.

专业特色


     环境设计专业以提升人居环境为根本目标,致力于学习功能完善且契合人们身体功能的设计方法,强调功能性、用户体验与材料创新,关注城市可持续性的多维度协同。秉承生态永续的理念,处理设计问题时采取整合的方法,关注气候变化、生物多样性和城乡可持续发展,培养应对不同场地问题的艺术性处理方式与设计策略。此外,环境设计专业还结合人工智能、大数据和机器人制造的背景,融合信息与媒体技术,培养创新性教育与实践能力,探索媒体信息与工学相结合的跨学科实践。


1.培养目标


     环境设计专业致力于培养在新时代背景下,能够应对复杂环境挑战的创造型设计人才。融合建筑学、工学、生态学与社会学等多维度知识体系,秉承可持续发展作为核心、跨学科跨专业协作为方法、创造性设计作为表达的教育理念。以“一带一路”沿线国家的新兴市场城市为主要对象,聚焦城市建设、城市更新、城市开发及环境品质提升等实践领域,回应快速城市化背景下复杂而现实的空间与社会问题。课程旨在培养具备扎实专业能力、能够适应不同发展阶段城市语境的复合型人才,使学生在理解在地条件与文化差异的基础上,形成面向新兴市场的系统性设计与实践能力,并建立开放而成熟的国际化视野。培养学生面对气候变化的责任,和社会空间问题的人文关怀,应对城乡环境变化中的设计问题,和复杂环境问题的解决能力。


2.核心课程


     环境设计课程为纯英文授课,包括环境设计、建筑设计、城市设计史、城市遗产保护、CAD、城市模型制作、城市公共空间、智慧城市等。

课程特别关注快速城市化背景下的城市更新与存量空间再生实践,通过对社区更新、历史街区保护、公共空间优化等议题的深入研究,引导学生理解城市发展所形成的复杂经验与现实路径,并在此基础上培养其将本土城市更新经验转化为具有国际比较意义的专业认知与实践能力。


3.实践性教学环节


     城市社区设计实践、生态环境野外调查与实践、乡土调研与实践、乡村基础设施调研与评估、文旅项目规划实践等。

     实践环节以项目制实践教学为核心组织方式,强调课程与真实场地、真实议题的深度融合。学生入学后即进入实践导向的教学体系,课程内容与正在推进的乡村振兴与城市更新项目同步展开。实践环节重点包括城乡社区设计实践、乡村与生态环境调研、乡土建造与基础设施评估,以及文旅与公共空间相关的规划与设计实践。教学结构上,课程以一年两个连续的大型实践课程为主线,每一学期围绕一个完整项目展开,从前期调研、问题识别、方案生成到策略深化,形成系统性的项目经验。实践场地依托已开展的真实项目,包括乡村振兴实践基地及具体的城市更新案例,如北京市通州区的张家湾小镇等,使学生在真实复杂的城乡语境中完成学习与实践。通过持续、深入的项目参与,课程突出培养学生在新兴市场与多元社会背景下的实践能力,使实践教学成为课程体系中最具吸引力和区分度的核心环节。

     在课程培养过程中,专业注重与行业机构的协同共建,形成教学、研究与实践相结合的人才培养体系。课程实践与教学内容将与相关专业机构联合开展,依托包括北规院、北建院等在内的规划与建筑设计研究单位,共同参与城市更新、城市建设与环境提升等真实项目。通过与行业一线机构的深度合作,学生能够直接参与正在推进的规划与设计实践,了解专业工作的完整流程,增强对城市发展与更新实践的现实认知,在真实复杂的制度、技术与社会语境中提升综合实践能力与职业素养,为未来在国际及“一带一路”沿线新兴市场开展专业实践奠定坚实基础。

     课程师资力量雄厚,汇聚了国内外知名学者、国家级教学名师及“中国设计业十大杰出青年”等领军人才。车飞教授(艺术设计学院院长、建筑师、德国包豪斯魏玛大学博士)、约翰·曼斯伯格教授(北京服装学院教授、汉堡建筑师协会特许会员,汉堡BDA德国建筑师协会一等奖获得者。学习于瑞士苏黎世联邦理工学院,德国布伦瑞克大学建筑学硕士。曾任德国汉堡GMP建筑师事务所设计师,GMP国际柏林和北京分公司设计总监。)、季铁男教授(建筑现象学学者、耶鲁大学建筑硕士、曾任教美国纽约州立大学水牛城分校建筑学院,印度辛赫格建筑学院,爱沙尼亚塔林科技大学建筑系,挪威卑尔根建筑学院)等来自美国、英国、荷兰、挪威等国的学者国际知名专家授课,打造多元、国际化的学术环境。全英文授课为学生提供全球视野与跨文化交流机会。


学科学制


     本科基本学制为4年,最长修业年限为6年。修满学分,到达毕业要求,准予毕业,发给毕业证书,符合学士学位规定条件者,授予中华人民共和国教育部颁发的学士学位。学习方式为全日制。


申请条件


1. 年龄原则上要求在18-24周岁之间,符合《中华人民共和国国籍法》相关规定,持外国有效护照的非中国籍公民。

2. 品行端正、身体健康,愿意遵守中华人民共和国的法律法规及学校纪律,尊重中国人民风俗习惯。

3. 具有高中毕业或以上文化程度。

4. 英文雅思5.5或相当于雅思5.5及以上水平。特别优秀者,上述报考条件可适当放宽。

(3)申请人护照复印件;

(7)申请动机信(英文);

(8)相关获奖证明文件。

注:以上证明材料必须为原件或公证件。

2. 网上支付报名费用600元人民币。(无论是否录取,报名费不退)

3. 面试或笔试(具体安排,另行通知)。


面试流程


    材料初审合格后,将通知学生参加现场面试或远程面试。


录取确认


1. 电邮邮寄报考资料和照片(电子版为JPG格式)、视频的截止时间为2026年6月10日,以寄送邮戳时间为准。

2. 专家组复审学生提交的材料。

3. 学校于2026年6月20日前确认面试名单,由专家组集体面试。

4. 学校将根据高中成绩、语言水平和面试情况择优录取。成绩优异的留学生可获得奖学金。


入学手续


1.《录取通知书》原件或复印件;

2.审核所有申请资料原件;

3.审核入学相关信息并签字确认;

4.在华事务担保人有效证件的复印件;

5.签证及体检结果证明;

6.近期护照用免冠白底照片2张;

7.未获得奖学金的同学须支付第一学年学费;

8.拟在校内留学生公寓住宿的学生须在2026年6月10日前申请,学院根据空床位实际情况按申请先后顺序予以安排。


相关费用标准及奖学金

2. 住宿费标准:人民币50-60元/床/天/人,分学期一次性支付。所有费用必须通过网上缴费平台支付。

3.留学生可以根据条件申请北京市外国留学生奖学金,奖学金从高到低分为A、B、C、D四个等级。

4.中国教育部规定,来华留学生必须购买中国大陆境内保险公司医疗保险。留学生可在报到前进行网上支付,或者于报到注册日当天现场购买医疗保险。对于没有购买所要求的医疗保险者,学校将不予办理注册手续。

住宿条件


1.学院配有学生宿舍。设有双人间、三人间(配有厨房),房间内配备空调、淋浴、卫生间、卧具等电器和生活用品,宿舍区设有自助洗衣房。

2.申请在校外居住的学生,须在入境后24小时内到当地的公安机关办理登记手续。

留学生管理


1.留学生管理按中国教育部《学校招收和培养国际学生管理办法》和学校留学生学籍管理、公寓管理等文件执行。

2.根据中国教育部规定,新生入校后三个月内将进行全面复查,复查不合格者,学校保留各种处理结果的资格。

3.留学生入境后在一周内赴北京国际旅行卫生保健中心海淀门诊部体检并领取《外国人体格检查记录》原件。

4.签证管理。

(1)申请人被录取后,学校将邮件发送录取通知书和来华学习签证申请表(JW201/JW202表),申请人收到材料后应及时前往中国驻外使领馆申请X1字签证,在抵达中国后30天内须将X1字签证转换成学习类居留许可。

(2)因特殊原因不能按时报到的,应在报到日期前发送电子邮件请假,学校可为其保留1个月的入学资格。无故逾期或请假后仍不能按时报到者,将被取消入学资格。

(3)如果申请人在办理报到前已有在华学习类居留许可,须在距离居留许可到期一个月之前到留学生办公室办理转学和签证延长手续。

其他未尽事宜由北京服装学院国际学院负责解释。
